This project is set in an isolated corner of New Bedford, while thedesign begins with the familiar townhouse typology, strategically modifying it to introduce shared spaces that soften boundaries and encourage interaction. By carving out flexible zones within each unit, the project creates a gradual transition between private and communal areas, fostering both connection and privacy.
Two townhouse modules are rotated and joined at these aDaptable spaces, forming a third shared zone that accommodates various social activities. This approach respects the local tradition of multi-family housing while integrating buffer spaces that maintain privacy. At a larger scale, these shared spaces link multiple units into clusters, creating a network of communal areas for gatherings, reading corners, and temporary service programs.
Beyond the housing clusters, the project includes improved roads that better align with pedestrian and cyclist needs, enhancing accessibility and connectivity. These flexible spaces also respond to coastal elevation challenges, ensuring long-term adaptability.
